We hypothesized that this fine-tuning of fibrinogen production is mediated via an upstream miR-29 target that could regulate all three fibrinogen chains. In particular, overexpression of the miR-29 family (hsa-miR-29abc) leads to down-regulation of the three major fibrinogen transcripts but not as a consequence of a miR-29fibrinogen mRNA interaction. Fibrinogen mRNAs are sensitive to post-transcriptional regulation by miRNAs. Fibrinogen expression is controlled by transcription factors that interact with regulatory elements in the fibrinogen gene cluster.
